WASHINGTON (AP) - Targeting a traditionally Democratic group,
George W. Bush is set to run Spanish-language ads in Arizona and
beyond as the Republican Party works to attract the nation's fastest-growing
population.
The Texas governor is not only hunting for votes on Sen. John
McCain's home turf; he's also looking ahead to the general election
and hoping to reverse the Democrats' advantage.
At the same time, the Republican National Committee is preparing
a multimillion-dollar ad campaign aimed at improving the party's
image among Hispanics.
The Bush ads all include the tag line ``es un nuevo dia,''
meaning ``it's a new day,'' and that's just the message Republicans
hope to send.
``There's a new day in America. There's a new leader. Positive.
Inclusive,'' says a Spanish-speaking narrator in the new TV spot,
which features Bush with Hispanics in Texas.
The ad will begin running next week on Spanish-language TV stations
in Arizona.
Hispanics gave most of their votes to President Clinton in 1992
and 1996, and they have played pivotal roles in other races, helping
elect Democrat Gray Davis as governor of California in 1998, for
instance.
