MONTERREY, Mexico - Just in time for Christmas, a toy company in the northern
city of Monterrey has released a talking doll that speaks in Mexican street
slang and tosses out one-liners about President Vicente Fox.
Topped with yellow hair and dressed in red shorts, sneakers and a T-shirt, the
doll is called "Hey, Chido" and was created by Fotorama de Mexico,
which specializes in board games.
On streets across Mexico, "chido" means the same thing as "cool" does in the United States.
When asked "Who is Fox?" the doll responds with either, "He's a cool rancher, like me" or "Isn't he the guy with the boots?"
Fox, from rural, central Guanajuato state, ended the 71-year reign of the Institutional Revolutionary Party when he took office in December 2000.
Fox's campaign image was bolstered by his rancher dress and he often made public appearances wearing his trademark cowboy boots and a huge silver belt buckle with the word "FOX" engraved across it.
The "Hey, Chido" doll owes its "speaking" ability to a
computer chip. Company officials say they are hoping the doll will be popular
with both adults and children.
