An Arizona teen-ager involved in an alcohol-related car crash
in Nogales, Sonora, last week died yesterday from his injuries.
David Ortiz, no age or address available, was the second teen-ager
to die from injuries sustained in the Jan. 21 crash. Adrian Guerrero
Noriega, 17, of Rio Rico, died of head injuries at the scene.
Authorities said this week that both drivers were under the influence
of alcohol.
Nine Arizona teens piled into a pickup truck driven by 17-year-old
Ramses Giron Bernal of Rio Rico, bound for Nogales, Sonora, nightclubs
where alcohol is available to underage drinkers, Salvador Alvarez,
head of the Nogales, Sonora Transit Police, told the Star this
week.
Bernal's truck collided early on the morning of Jan. 21 with a
vehicle driven by Fernando Daniel Carrillo Victor of Nogales,
Sonora, sending Giron Bernal's eight passengers flying into the
street.
Passenger Isias Giron, no age or address available, remains in
critical condition at University Medical Center.
A report has been filed against Giron Bernal with the Sonora state
prosecutor alleging negligent homicide, state prosecutor Julio
Cesar Valenzuela Murrieta said this week. Giron Bernal reportedly
ran a stop sign.
Formal charges are pending completion of the investigation, Murrieta
said. Mexican officials couldn't be reached yesterday to comment
on Ortiz's death.
