Lesson Description:

Federalist Papers 10 and 51 describe the relationship of the human quest for power and its relationship to government and the common good. Humans must both control the government and be controlled by it. Federalist Papers 10 and 51 describe the relationship of human nature and government. In this lesson students will explain and apply this relationship to their lives and current events.

Goal: At the conclusion of the lesson students will apply the ides contained in Federalist Papers 10 and 51 to their own human nature and current events.

Objectives:

The student will (TSW)

1. Read selected quotes in Handout #1
2. Describe the meaning of the quotes and ideas then relate them to history and current events. Handout 4
3. Discuss the ideas and relate the ideas using the handout in small groups. Handout 2
4. Debate the question. "Are the descriptions of human nature in 10 and 51 accurate? Handout 5
5. Write a position paper which answers the essential question, "Is government the 'greatest reflection of human nature'?" Handout 3

Procedure:

1. Students read quotes from the papers.
