Explaining the Problem

The Problem

Long ago, a group of men concerned about justice, freedom and democracy built the basis of the strong government that now a days our country lies under, but the strength and passion that the founding fathers had to achieve a sovereign country has been lost throughout the generations. Youth in Ambos Nogales lack a political conscience, giving as a result a government ruled mainly by people whose actions revolve around their self interests. This is a very serious problem since the future of the present generations depend upon decisions taken in the present by governors who are mere strangers to these generations. This problem exists in a greater manner in Nogales, Sonora and all over Mexico, but still, young people do not demonstrate much interest in the subject. This problem should be handled by their own citizens. Exercising civic virtue and the power of the vote, well informed citizens can change problems like corruption. In Nogales Sonora, the law for dealing with this problem is not being well enforced because citizens are not involved / concerned enough to change the situation by being good citizens: instead, they choose to break the law. There are many disagreements in our community about this problem. Most people believe that big issues such as poverty and corruption are almost impossible to solve since it depends on the behavior of the people (governors) that are not working with honesty.Another disagreement is derived from the idea that the problem is rooted in the culture and the years and years of corruption in all the ways. The major individuals taking sides on the problem are the ones who suffer the consequences of injustice and corruption in Ambos Nogales. People who are honest and work for a fair way of living with integrity get to see how the money and power of the country is kept in a very tight circle. These individuals are interested in the problem because they see themselves affected by the situation. They are taking that position against the way elections and our entire government works. By taking this position, these individuals can make big changes in the country, but the big disadvantage they face is to create a conflict among the community and the government. Citizens interested in a more democrat and justice government are trying to influence government to adopt their views by expressing themselves through the first amendment of the U.S. Constitution freedom of expression. Freedom of speech and the diffusion that radio stations and local news paper provides to the community are great means by which citizens communicate their concerns to government.

So far, there are several programs in Mexico to form more aware citizens and the political conscience in Mexico. IFE (Instituto Federal Electoral ) is in charge of informing citizens about the process that needs to be followed to vote, but it does not provide the type of information citizens need to elect the right person to govern them. Some programs transmitted in National Television and radio encourage citizens to be conscientious about the big responsibility they have when in comes to governmental elections and the importance of civic virtue.
